A symphonic program at Pinecrest Gardens brings storytelling and poetry to the forefront through orchestral works inspired by literature and verse.
Orchestra Miami presents A Classical Series: Poetry in Music takes place Sunday, April 18, at Pinecrest Gardens. The evening centers on Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, a landmark symphonic poem that draws on tales from The Thousand and One Nights, portraying the legendary storyteller whose nightly narratives ultimately transform her fate. The work is known for its vivid orchestration and recurring themes that evoke drama, suspense and lyricism.
Also on the program is Four Walt Whitman Songs, a song cycle setting the poet’s words to music. The selections include “Beat! Beat! Drums!,” “O Captain! My Captain!,” “Come Up from the Fields, Father” and “Dirge for Two Veterans,” offering a contrasting American perspective rooted in poetry and history.
The performance runs from 6 to 8 p.m., with Orchestra Miami conducted by Elaine Rinaldi in the garden setting.
