A Life Illuminated

A deep-sea journey into one of Earth’s least understood environments unfolds through the work of a pioneering marine biologist. A Life Illuminated screens Friday, April 10 at Coral Gables Art Cinema as part of the 43rd Miami Film Festival.

Directed by Tasha Van Zandt, the documentary follows Dr. Edie Widder, a leading figure in ocean exploration, as she descends into the ocean’s twilight zone to study bioluminescent life forms. Known for capturing the first footage of the giant squid, Widder continues her research into the luminous signals and behaviors that shape life in extreme depths.

Presented as a Florida premiere and an official selection of the Toronto International Film Festival, the film combines scientific discovery with immersive underwater imagery, offering a contemplative look at the ocean’s hidden ecosystems and the ongoing search to better understand them.
