ABFF Community Day
This event has passed.
Celebrate storytelling and community during an afternoon of free film screenings and cultural programming in the heart of Historic Overtown. Presented as part of the American Black Film Festival, this event invites audiences to explore a range of Black experiences through independent cinema, conversation and local engagement.
ABFF Community Day takes place Sunday, June 15 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater and is sponsored by the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau. The day begins with red carpet and press interviews at 12:45 p.m., followed by a lineup of three screenings.
At 1:45 p.m., Trouble Man—an action-comedy directed by and starring Michael Jai White—follows a former cop turned fixer navigating gang rivalries and organized crime while searching for a missing R&B star. The screening includes a post-film Q&A with White.
At 4:00 p.m., Wednesdays with Gramps presents a short film about a teenager’s visit to his grandfather’s assisted living facility, where unexpected common ground leads to deeper connection.
The day concludes at 4:30 p.m. with The Reject, a feature inspired by the life of Kionne McGhee. The film follows a young man’s journey through misdiagnosis, injustice and perseverance to become an attorney and political leader working to reform the system that failed him.
A vendor expo will take place alongside the screenings. Admission is free and open to the public.
