Botanical arts and embroidery take center stage in a monthly workshop series that blends creativity, sustainability and cultural traditions.
AgriCulture Night Workshop: Embroidering Nature & Tradition takes place at the Vizcaya Village Garage on October 16, November 13 and December 18. Each session introduces beginner-friendly techniques inspired by Vizcaya’s gardens and history, giving participants the opportunity to explore art-making through plants and cultural traditions.
- October 16 – Floral Impressions: Stitching with Nature
Learn the Japanese technique of Tataki Zomé (flower pounding) to transfer pigments from flowers and leaves onto fabric, then add embroidery stitches to enhance your design. Participants take home a hand-embroidered, naturally dyed textile. - November 13 – Nature Preserved: Botanical Bookmark Craft
Create a resin bookmark using pre-pressed flowers and leaves, preserving nature’s beauty in a personal keepsake. The workshop provides molds, UV machines and decorative elements to customize each piece. - December 18 – Naturally Festive: Embroidered Ornament Hoops
Watch a live demo on natural dyeing with onion skins and avocado pits, then stitch a holiday motif into pre-dyed fabric to craft a meaningful ornament or gift.
The workshops are led by Stephanie Alvarez, founder of StitchAway Designs, whose practice emphasizes sustainability and cultural connection. Her approach to embroidery encourages mindful making while celebrating heritage, community and the beauty of handmade work.
