The story of a groundbreaking playwright and activist comes to life in a documentary screening at the Koubek Center as part of the Miami Film Festival.
American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez screens Saturday, April 11, tracing the life and legacy of the pioneering Chicano artist whose work reshaped American theater and film. Directed by David Alvarado, the film follows Valdez’s evolution from migrant farmworker to founder of El Teatro Campesino, a company that used performance as a tool for social change during the farmworkers’ movement of the 1960s.
The documentary highlights key milestones in Valdez’s career, including Zoot Suit, the first Chicano play to reach Broadway, and La Bamba, a landmark film that brought Mexican American stories to a global audience. Through archival footage and contemporary reflections, the film examines his lasting influence on Latino/a cultural expression and the continued impact of El Teatro Campesino more than six decades after its founding.
A Florida premiere, the film arrives following recognition at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, where it received both the Audience Award for U.S. Documentary and the Festival Favorite Award.
