An Evening with Alexia Nader
Oct 18, 2026
Starting: 7:00 PM
Author Alexia Nader discusses The Meaning of Daughter, her new multigenerational novel tracing a Lebanese-Haitian family across Haiti, New York and Miami. Presented Sunday, October 18 at Books & Books in Coral Gables, the conversation is moderated by novelist Fabienne Josaphat.
Moving among three generations of women, The Meaning of Daughter follows Merjan, who immigrates from Lebanon to Haiti and dreams of becoming a painter; her daughter Yvonne, who hopes to establish a Haitian art gallery in New York; and granddaughter Eva, an art student who returns to her childhood home in Miami after an unexpected pregnancy. The novel explores motherhood, ambition, artistic identity, family conflict and the expectations placed on women across generations.
Nader’s writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The Nation and the Los Angeles Review of Books. Josaphat is the author of Kingdom of No Tomorrow, winner of the 2023 PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction, and Dancing in the Baron’s Shadow.
Admission is free with RSVP, though seating is not guaranteed. Copies of The Meaning of Daughter will be available for purchase.
