An Evening with Ivonne Lamazares
Jul 25, 2025
Starting: 7:00 PM
Estranged sisters confront their shared past amid the backdrop of 1990s Cuba, where family secrets and political upheaval intertwine. An Evening with Ivonne Lamazares takes place on Friday, July 25 at Books & Books, presented by the Books & Books Literary Foundation. The author will discuss her new novel The Tilting House, which explores themes of identity, loss and the complex emotions of returning home.
In this compelling narrative, a teenage orphan named Yuri living with her religious aunt in Havana encounters Mariela, an artist from the United States who claims to be her long-lost sister. When their aunt is mysteriously jailed, Yuri finds herself drawn into Mariela's world, uncovering decades of family history shaped by Cuba's political landscape and the painful separation of exile.
Lamazares, born in Havana and now a writing instructor at Miami Dade College, brings her own experience of leaving Cuba at age thirteen to this deeply resonant work. Her previous novel, The Sugar Island, received international acclaim with translations in seven languages.
Admission to this literary event is free, with copies of The Tilting House available for purchase.
