An Evening with Richard McGarry
Mar 05, 2026
Starting: 6:30 PM
A local author and illustrator presents a newly released book capturing a detailed streetscape of Coconut Grove as it appeared in the early 1970s. The event includes a discussion and book signing at Books & Books in Coconut Grove.
An Evening with Richard McGarry takes place Thursday, March 5 at 6:30 p.m.
The program celebrates the release of The Grove Scroll, a reproduction of McGarry’s original 104-foot continuous drawing depicting downtown Coconut Grove in 1971, when the neighborhood was a small, bohemian enclave on the edge of the City of Miami. The illustrated panorama traces a route from the anchor at MacFarlane Road and Biscayne Bay past Peacock Park, Main Highway and the Coconut Grove Playhouse, winding through Commodore Plaza and Fuller Street before returning to Main Highway. Along the way, it documents dozens of now-closed local landmarks and businesses. The original artwork is part of the HistoryMiami Museum collection.
McGarry, a Miami native, is known for books focused on Coconut Grove and Key West history, architectural illustration and building construction. Admission is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase, and seating is first come, first served.
