Art of Transformation: Afrotypes and the Anti Archive
Dec 02, 2026
Black visual culture, diasporic memory and contemporary artistic practice come into focus across multiple venues in historic Opa-locka during the 13th annual Art of Transformation. Presented by Ten North Group in partnership with the City of Opa-locka, the 2026 edition opens Wednesday, December 2 during Miami Art Week and continues through February 2027, with six exhibitions spread across five locations.
This year’s theme, Afrotypes and the Anti-Archive, examines the recurring symbols, visual languages and cultural references that circulate across Black expressive traditions while questioning the idea of the African diaspora as a fixed or completed historical record. Instead, the project approaches memory as something mobile, adaptive and continually reshaped across generations and geographies.
A VIP opening takes place December 2, followed on December 5 by Afrotypes and the Anti-Archive: The Conversation, an annual panel discussion expanding on the exhibition’s themes. Art of Transformation is an official Miami Art Week destination and an affiliate event of Art Basel Miami Beach.
