This event has passed.
A conversation at the intersection of art, music and cultural history brings Fab 5 Freddy to Pérez Art Museum Miami for an Art (+ Soul) Talk exploring creativity, influence and legacy.
The program features Fab 5 Freddy in conversation with Franklin Sirmans, Sandra and Tony Tamer director at PAMM, reflecting on a career that has consistently dissolved boundaries between so-called high and popular culture. From early graffiti practice and underground film to television, music and publishing, Fab 5 Freddy’s work has helped expand global visibility for Black creativity while reshaping how art circulates across communities and institutions. The discussion traces his creative path and ongoing sources of inspiration, including insights from his forthcoming memoir, Everybody’s Fly: A Life of Art, Music, and Changing the Culture.
Born Fred Brathwaite, Fab 5 Freddy emerged as a pivotal figure in New York City’s downtown art and hip-hop scenes, becoming one of the first graffiti artists to exhibit internationally and helping usher street art into galleries and museums. As co-host of the groundbreaking television series Yo! MTV Raps and a key contributor to the cult film Wild Style, his influence spans visual art, music, film and media. His recent work continues to bridge cultural worlds, from museum exhibitions to socially driven creative projects.
Live translation will be available in American Sign Language, Spanish and Haitian Creole. The conversation will also be streamed live via PAMM’s YouTube channel.
Admission is free with museum entry. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
