Buddhism, Meditation and Humanistic Buddhism
Jan 14, 2026
From: 11:00 AM to 12:15 PM
A lunchtime talk explores the relationship between meditation, Buddhist practice and the contemporary movement known as Humanistic Buddhism.
Buddhism, Meditation and Humanistic Buddhism takes place at the SIPA II building on the FIU Modesto A. Maidique Campus, presented by FIU’s Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs. The program examines common assumptions about meditation and Buddhism, addressing questions such as whether meditation alone constitutes Buddhist practice and how different traditions approach spiritual discipline.
The discussion introduces Humanistic Buddhism, a modern framework rooted in Buddhist philosophy that emphasizes compassion, wisdom, ethical living and social responsibility in everyday life. Rather than focusing solely on monastic or meditative traditions, Humanistic Buddhism centers human experience and active engagement with the world.
Designed as an accessible, reflective conversation, the session considers how these ideas may offer perspective and grounding amid contemporary social division and uncertainty. The event is open to students, faculty and the wider community interested in religion, philosophy and global cultural thought.
