Dance, diaspora and identity converge in a documentary screening and conversation presented by Pérez Art Museum Miami’s Caribbean Cultural Institute.
Caribbean Film Focus: Havana Habibi takes place Thursday, October 1, featuring Tiffany Madera’s award-winning film and a panel discussion that follows. The documentary traces Madera’s 2003 journey to Havana, where she founded Cuba’s first Arabic dance troupe, Grupo Aisha Al-Hanan. Blending performance and cultural exchange, the film explores how grassroots art movements can challenge sanctioned models of culture while fostering community and transformation. Free with RSVP; seating is first come, first served. The film contains themes that may not be suitable for those under 18.
Miami-based artist and filmmaker Tiffany Madera has built a career re-coding Egyptian Baladi dance as a medium for empowerment and social justice. Her projects span Miami, the Caribbean, Latin America and North Africa, weaving performance, film and scholarship into global conversations on migration, womanhood and power. A recipient of major institutional support, Madera continues to shape Miami’s cultural landscape through films, workshops and interdisciplinary collaborations.
