Mar 19, 2026
From: 10:00 AM to Noon
A guided walking tour through Historic Overtown examines how environmental policy, urban planning and development have shaped one of Miami’s most historically significant neighborhoods. Concrete, Culture and Climate: The Story of Historic Overtown takes place Thursday, March 19 from 10 a.m. to noon, beginning at the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater.
Led by local historian and guide Keith Ivory, the tour explores how decisions about land use, transportation infrastructure and urban development have influenced the community over time. Participants will learn about the construction of major highways through Overtown and how those planning choices affected the neighborhood’s social and physical landscape.
The walk also connects Overtown’s history to current conversations about climate change, rising property pressures and climate gentrification, offering insight into how environmental and policy decisions intersect with the lived experiences of residents. Along the route, guides highlight the cultural legacy of the area and the role community history plays in shaping discussions about resilience and equity in Miami.
The tour begins at the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater and concludes at Dorsey Park. It is presented as part of the Miami Climate Week programming.
