Contemporary Currents: The Vessels of Memory We Carry

Indigo textiles, a bottle tree, a sweetgrass basket and film trace artist Tori S. Scott’s exploration of Gullah Geechee heritage, family history and ancestral memory. The exhibition is on view August 1 through October 20 in the Garden Room of the Deering Estate’s historic Richmond Cottage. It is presented through Contemporary Currents, an annual series that places work by current and former Deering Estate artists-in-residence in dialogue with the property’s collections and historic spaces.

The Vessels of Memory We Carry brings together mixed-media works developed through two years of research into utilitarian art, agricultural traditions, spiritual practices and textile techniques. Indigo serves as a recurring visual element associated with resilience and cultural preservation, while Scott’s installations examine how stories and traditions pass among individuals, families and communities.

A Miami-based visual artist, educator and curator, Scott uses interdisciplinary storytelling to consider how cultural memory is preserved, transformed or forgotten. Her work has been exhibited at the Frost Art Museum, the Lowe Art Museum and Deering Estate.

An opening reception takes place Saturday, August 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. Admission to the reception is free, with advance tickets available through Eventbrite.
