Cosmic Myths

Percussion becomes a source of metallic resonance, vocal expression and layered rhythm in a chamber program featuring works by Andy Akiho, Amy Beth Kirsten and Iannis Xenakis. The concert takes place Friday, October 16 at New World Center in Miami Beach. Michael Linville conducts Fellows of the New World Symphony, with NWS alumnus Sergio Carreno featured on percussion.

The program opens with selected movements from Akiho’s Seven Pillars, followed by Kirsten’s they might be giants for flute and vocalizing percussion quartet. Xenakis’ Pléiades concludes the concert with the movements “Métaux” and “Mélanges,” combining bright metallic sonorities with dense, interlocking patterns.

Linville, an NWS alumnus and the ensemble’s dean of instrumental performance, also directs the New World Percussion Ensemble. Miami native Carreno is a member of the Oregon Symphony percussion section and has performed with orchestras including The Cleveland Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony and San Francisco Symphony.
