Cuban Cinema Series
New dates TBD
From: 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Explore the rich cultural heritage of Cuban film with the Cuban Cinema Series, presented by Miami Dade College (MDC) in partnership with the Miami Film Festival. For the series' May installment, The Padilla Affair, directed by Pavel Giroud, will be screened at the newly renovated theater in Miami-Dade College's Koubek Memorial Center on Thursday, May 16. The film's introduction and Q&A session will be conducted in Spanish. Admission is free.
The Padilla Affair delves into the gripping events surrounding poet Heberto Padilla's appearance before the Cuban Writers' Union in Havana in spring 1971. Witness Padilla's profound "self-criticism" statement and accusations of being a counterrevolutionary agent, igniting global intellectual discourse. The film includes insightful testimonies from notable figures such as Gabriel García Márquez, Julio Cortázar and Fidel Castro.
Founded and curated by renowned film critic and author Alejandro Ríos, the Cuban Cinema Series brings together filmmakers, special guests and enthusiasts alike. Enjoy complimentary valet parking, live music and refreshments available for purchase at each screening. The 2024 edition of the series, sponsored by ArtesMiami, will showcase six iconic Cuban films at MDC's Koubek Memorial Center in the heart of Little Havana. Don't miss out on this celebration of Cuban cinema. The series will resume after the 41st Miami Film Festival, scheduled for April 5-14, 2024, which will also spotlight Cuban films curated by Ríos.
