Dye Workshop Series
May 23, 2026 - Oct 10, 2026
Select Days
Starting: 11:00 AM
Natural pigments from South Florida native plants are the focus of a hands-on workshop series led by Deering Estate Artists-in-Residence Aida Tejada and Debora Rosental. The Dye Workshop Series takes place Saturday, May 23, Saturday, August 8 and Saturday, October 10 at the Deering Estate Pump House in Palmetto Bay.
Participants will learn the basics of natural color making through a guided demonstration on preparing plant-based paints, mixing formulas and observing how different species produce variations in color. The workshop begins with an introduction to the plants used in the session and their traditional applications in dye practices, followed by a sampler of color studies using provided materials. Guests will also create a personalized piece with stencils and hand-applied pigments.
Tejada and Rosental are co-authors of South Florida Color Palette: Native Plants and Natural Dyes, a publication connected to their shared interest in regional ecology, plant-based color and material experimentation. Tejada’s interdisciplinary practice incorporates natural and reclaimed materials, while Rosental brings a background in biochemistry, cellular biology, weaving, embroidery and natural dyeing. The beginner-friendly workshop is open to ages 12 and older, with all materials included.
