A cult favorite of 1990s teen cinema returns to the big screen during an outdoor screening at Rooftop Cinema Club South Beach. Empire Records will be shown Wednesday, April 8 as part of the venue’s rooftop film series overlooking Miami Beach.
Released in 1995 and directed by Allan Moyle, the film follows a group of employees at an independent record store fighting to keep their workplace from being taken over by a corporate chain. Set over the course of a single chaotic day, the story captures the rebellious spirit of alternative music culture in the 1990s, with a cast that includes Liv Tyler, Renée Zellweger, Ethan Embry and Anthony LaPaglia. Though it performed modestly at the box office, Empire Records later gained a devoted following for its soundtrack, ensemble cast and memorable lines such as “Damn the man. Save the Empire.”
The screening celebrates the film’s fictional “Rex Manning Day,” a recurring theme for fans who continue to revisit the movie each April. Guests can watch from Adirondack-style seating on the rooftop while enjoying food and snacks available for purchase.
