En La Caliente: Tales of a Reggaeton Warrior
This event has passed.
Life, music and rebellion intertwine in this compelling documentary about Cuba's underground reggaeton movement. Presented by the University of Miami Libraries, En La Caliente: Tales of a Reggaeton Warrior screens at the University of Miami's Kislak Center on Thursday, February 6.
The film chronicles the rise of reggaeton in Santiago de Cuba during the mid-1990s, focusing on pioneering artist Kandyman and his influence during the economic hardships of the Special Period. Despite official censorship and bans from public spaces, the genre spread through informal networks of USB drives and CD-Rs, becoming a form of cultural expression for Cuban youth.
Director Fabien Pisani and Cuban journalist Carlos Manuel Álvarez will join the screening for a discussion moderated by Michael J. Bustamante. The film will be presented in Spanish with English subtitles, followed by a Spanish-language discussion. This free event is hosted by the Cuban Heritage Collection.
