From Spain and Cuba at The Bass

Spanish and Cuban chamber music comes into focus with works by Manuel Canales, Ignacio Cervantes and Joaquín Turina at The Bass in Miami Beach. The South Beach Chamber Ensemble performs the program on Saturday, October 10, pairing Classical-era Spanish repertoire with music shaped by Cuban and Andalusian traditions. Selections include Canales’ String Quartet in D Major, Op. 1, Cervantes’ Danzas Cubanas and Turina’s String Quartet in D Minor, Op. 4.

Cervantes is remembered as one of 19th-century Cuba’s leading composers and pianists, with his Danzas Cubanas blending European forms with distinctly Cuban rhythmic character. Turina drew extensively on the musical traditions of Andalusia, while Canales was among Spain’s early composers of string quartets during the Classical period.

Founded in 1997 by Michael Andrews, the South Beach Chamber Ensemble presents chamber music throughout South Florida through its Music in Beautiful Spaces series, with an emphasis on accessible performances and local musicians. Admission is free, but advance RSVP and a ticket are required.
