Frost After Dark: Grit & Grain Exhibition + Typewriter Poetry Night
Feb 04, 2026
From: 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM
An evening at the Frost Art Museum brings photography, writing and music together through a new exhibition and an interactive poetry experience.
Frost After Dark: Grit & Grain Exhibition + Typewriter Poetry Night marks the opening of Grit & Grain: Four Decades of Lens-Based Practice at FIU, an exhibition drawn from the museum’s collection that examines the legacy of Florida International University’s photography program. Featuring works by alumni alongside photographs by faculty, the exhibition reflects a teaching philosophy centered on intuition, close observation and the artist’s role as a critical witness, tracing how those values have shaped generations of lens-based practice.
The opening is paired with a hands-on typewriter poetry night, where visitors are invited to create original texts on restored typewriters provided by Patton Horton. Guided by imaginative prompts from FIU writing instructor Mario Avalos, whose work spans poetry and screenwriting, the activity encourages spontaneous creative response within the gallery setting.
Music throughout the evening is provided by DJ Romulo, a co-founder of Schematic Music Company and a longtime figure in Miami’s cultural landscape. The event takes place Wednesday, February 4 at the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum FIU.
