Haitian Heritage Month Kick Off
May 02, 2025
From: 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM
An evening of art and conversation will open North Miami’s month-long recognition of Haitian heritage, highlighting the historical and cultural contributions of the Haitian community in the United States.
The Haitian Heritage Month Kick Off will take place on Friday, May 2, at the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami. Presented by the City of North Miami, this year’s theme, Nou La! Haitian Footprints in America, focuses on honoring the influence and legacy of Haitians across the country. Guests are invited to explore the museum’s featured exhibition, The Maiden is The Warrior by artist Vickie Pierre, followed by a panel discussion titled Haitian Advocacy and Social Justice in America.
The conversation will feature Santra Denis, MPH (Executive Director of the Miami Workers Center and President & Founder of Avanse Ansanm); Dr. Shirley Plantin (Chief Executive Consultant, U-Turn Youth Consulting); Dudley Alexis (Filmmaker and Visual Artist); and Paul Christian Namphy (Lead Organizer, FANM). Panelists will reflect on the often-unrecognized role of Haitians and Haitian-Americans in shaping social justice movements throughout U.S. history, including civil rights, immigrant justice, labor rights, education equity and disaster response.
