Hampton Art Lovers: Movies Under a Simple Tree ft. Interstate
Oct 10, 2025
From: 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Hampton Art Lovers presents an outdoor screening of Interstate as part of its ongoing Movies Under a Simple Tree series at the Historic Ward Rooming House. The evening begins with a reception, followed by the film and an artist talk featuring co-director Oscar Corral and Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins, moderated by Christopher Norwood of Hampton Art Lovers.
Interstate examines the far-reaching legacy of the U.S. Interstate Highway System, an engineering marvel that reshaped the nation while displacing Black communities across Miami, New Orleans, Baltimore and beyond. Through firsthand accounts and historical context, the documentary traces both the destruction and the enduring resilience of neighborhoods fractured by infrastructure and policy.
Directed by Oscar Corral and Haleem Muhsin, the film expands on Corral’s earlier work about I-95’s impact on Overtown, revealing that the pattern of displacement extended nationwide. Corral, an Emmy-winning filmmaker and former Miami Herald journalist, and Muhsin, a South Florida–based cinematographer known for his collaborations with award-winning crews, bring a shared commitment to socially conscious storytelling.
Hosted by Urgent Inc. and sponsored by Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins (District 5), the screening invites audiences to reflect on justice, preservation and community healing. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and snacks for a relaxed movie night under the stars.
