Hijos de la Diaspora: Film Screening
This event has passed.
Discover how Cuban culture persists across generations and borders through the eyes of those who carry it with them around the world. Join University of Miami Libraries for a screening of Hijos de la Diaspora on Tuesday, March 18, at the Kislak Center at UM as part of the Week of Cuban Culture.
The evening begins with a reception at 6:00 p.m. in the Roberto C. Goizueta Pavilion on the second floor, followed by the program and screening at 6:45 p.m. in the Kislak Center on the first floor.
This documentary explores the experiences of 21 young Cubans who grew up in nine different countries outside the island, from Scotland to Ecuador, Canada to Angola and across the United States. Each participant represents different emigration experiences from Cuba, some have never visited the island or retain only vague memories. Through their stories, the film investigates the complex dynamics of living between two cultures: the Cuban home and the country where they were raised.
Despite narratives of familial separation and cultural displacement, each interviewee highlights how Cuban identity has survived and evolved within them. The film offers a window into the adaptability of cultural heritage across geographical boundaries and generations.
The documentary will be presented in Spanish with English subtitles, making it accessible to a wider audience. Following the screening, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a question and answer session with the director and producer.
This event is organized through a collaborative partnership between the Federación de Estudiantes Cubanos and the Cuban Heritage Collection.
