A tasting and live performance invite visitors to experience Japanese culinary and musical traditions in a setting designed to engage multiple senses.
Japanese Food, Sake & Traditional Live Music takes place Friday, February 13 at the Coral Gables Museum. The program combines Japanese food and sake tastings with a live performance by a shakuhachi and koto duo, offering an immersive introduction to the country’s classical soundscape.
The breath-driven tones of the shakuhachi, historically associated with Zen practice, intertwine with the koto’s resonant, harp-like strings to create a contemplative musical dialogue. Together, the pairing establishes a calm, atmospheric backdrop that complements the tasting experience and highlights the expressive depth of traditional Japanese music.
Presented as part of Five Senses of Japan, the event contributes to a broader exploration of Japanese culture at the Coral Gables Museum through food, film, visual art, fashion and performance, with an emphasis on both historical tradition and contemporary interpretation.
