George Balanchine’s dazzling triptych Jewels comes to the Adrienne Arsht Center in a production by Miami City Ballet. Created in 1967 by the co-founder of New York City Ballet and one of the most influential choreographers of the 20th century, the ballet is widely regarded as the first full-length abstract work of its kind. Conceived as an homage to the French, American and Russian schools of ballet, it reflects Balanchine’s deep ties to each tradition.
Emeralds, set to the lush romanticism of Fauré, glows with French elegance; Rubies, driven by Stravinsky’s syncopated rhythms, bursts with wit and American jazz spirit; and Diamonds, paired with Tchaikovsky’s grandeur, shines with the majesty of classical Russian ballet. Together, they form a glittering evening of dance that balances lyricism, humor and virtuosity.
Performances of Jewels take place March 27–29 at the Adrienne Arsht Center. Public ticket sales begin September 19.
