Karaoke del Despecho: Poetry & Heartbreak Para Cantar

A karaoke night centered on heartbreak songs invites participants to turn emotional expression into poetry.

Karaoke del Despecho: Poetry & Heartbreak Para Cantar takes place Wednesday, April 8 at Fonda Dulce Jesús Mío in Hialeah as part of the O, Miami Poetry Festival. Inspired by canciones de despecho from across the Latin American diaspora, the event combines karaoke with a poetry salon format, encouraging attendees to both perform and write.

Participants can take the mic to sing familiar songs of love and loss while also translating those themes into original poetry. The evening blends music, writing and social interaction in a setting that shifts between casual karaoke bar and creative gathering space.

The program features Jeilin Espinel, a Venezuelan-born, Miami-based artist whose multidisciplinary work explores themes of migration, memory and identity through photography, film and writing. Her practice adds a reflective dimension to the event’s focus on personal storytelling and cultural expression.
