KŌGEI: The Fragility of Tradition
Jan 20, 2026
From: 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM
An evening screening and discussion explores the artistry, cultural significance and living traditions of Japanese kōgei through film and scholarship.
KŌGEI: The Fragility of Tradition takes place Tuesday, January 20 at the Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami. Presented by The Brickellian, the program features an exclusive trailer screening of the documentary Kōgei: The Fragility of Tradition, which examines Japanese craftsmanship through the perspectives of three women actively shaping and sustaining these practices today.
The evening also includes insight from Dr. Alan Scott Pate, a leading authority on antique Japanese dolls (ningyō) and author of Art As Ambassador: The Japanese Friendship Dolls of 1927. His presentation highlights how these objects have served as cultural bridges, carrying meaning across generations and international boundaries.
