La Bachata de Bionico
May 31, 2025
Starting: 7:30 PM
Blurring the line between fiction and documentary, this satirical drama follows a man navigating addiction and marginalization in his quest to reclaim love and agency. Set in a gritty Caribbean cityscape, the story unfolds with unflinching honesty as its protagonist, known as Biónico, confronts both his inner struggles and the external forces that shape his world.
La Bachata de Biónico screens Saturday, May 31 at the Koubek Center as part of the Third Horizon Film Festival. Directed by Yoel Morales, a Dominican filmmaker and member of the Mentes Fritas collective, the film is presented in Spanish with English subtitles. A Q&A with Morales will follow the screening.
Morales’s work spans music videos, documentaries and genre-blending features. His debut film Azul Magia, inspired by Taíno folklore, received critical acclaim and amassed over nine million views online. He is currently developing his next feature, Il Panetierre, a Dominican-Italian co-production. Viewer discretion is advised due to explicit content involving violence, drug use and nudity. This screening is supported by the Dominican Republic Film Commission (DGCINE).
