Internal conflict, fractured memory and generational reckoning shape this contemporary reimagining of Shakespeare’s King Lear.
Lear will be performed September 25–28 at the Adrienne Arsht Center as part of the 39th International Hispanic Theatre Festival of Miami. Presented by the Adrienne Arsht Center and Teatro Avante, this Spanish-language production is adapted and directed by Neher Jacqueline Briceño and performed by Miami’s Teatro Avante.
Inspired by King Lear, the piece explores the collapse of patriarchal power through a nonlinear journey into the king’s fading memory. As father-daughter relationships unravel and the consequences of power come into focus, a young figure emerges to voice long-suppressed truths. Time in Lear does not advance; it loops and fragments, turning memory into a site of confrontation and transformation.
