Lecture: Race Against Plant Extinction
The date for this annual event has passed. A new date will be provided when available.
Chief Botanist at NatureServe, Wesley Knapp will lead a talk on the plant extinction crisis on Wednesday, April 26 at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. Extinction rates are expected to increase in the near future, yet we have a poor understanding of what plants have already gone extinct and the reasons for these extinctions. Every extinction is a conservation failure and identifying the reasons for past extinction events may help us prevent future extinctions. Among the 65 plant taxa believed extinct from the continental United States and Canada, 4 were endemic to Florida, with 2 being global single-site endemics. In the talk, Knapp will discuss each of these Florida extinctions in detail.
