Live Demonstration: Alfombra de Aserrin

A live, hands-on demonstration at the Coral Gables Museum invites participants to help create a traditional Guatemalan sawdust carpet.

Live Demonstration: Alfombra de Aserrín takes place Thursday, March 26. The program offers an opportunity to observe and take part in the collaborative process behind these intricate, ephemeral artworks, which are traditionally created during Holy Week in La Antigua Guatemala.

Using dyed sawdust and natural materials, participants will contribute to the design and construction of the carpet while learning about its cultural significance, symbolism and community-centered origins. The experience highlights both the craftsmanship and shared effort that define this longstanding artistic tradition.
