Sep 19, 2025 - Sep 21, 2025
Fri-Sat: 8:30 PM | Sun: 5:00 PM
Epic exploration and live music come together in this theatrical retelling of the first voyage to circumnavigate the globe.
Magalhães (Magellan) will be performed September 19–21 at the Adrienne Arsht Center as part of the 39th International Hispanic Theatre Festival of Miami. Presented by the Adrienne Arsht Center and Teatro Avante, this Spanish-language production is written by Francisco Sánchez and performed by Chile’s Compañía Tryo Teatro Banda.
The play follows Portuguese explorer Fernão Magalhães (Ferdinand Magellan) as he leads a Spanish expedition in search of a westward route to the Spice Islands. Along the way, the crew faces shipwrecks, mutiny, hunger and hardship—and ultimately becomes the first to cross from the Atlantic to the Pacific. With its signature blend of storytelling and live music, Tryo Teatro Banda brings this historical journey to life, including the first recorded contact between European sailors and the Indigenous peoples of southern Chile.
