Experience the multifaceted world of Haitian artist Manuel Mathieu in a major U.S. debut. This dual exhibition, featuring World Discovered Under Other Skies and Dwelling on the Invisible, delves into the profound history and ongoing struggles of Haiti.
World Discovered Under Other Skies, originally shown in Toronto, showcases Mathieu's vibrant paintings, ceramics and installations. These works explore the complexities and lasting effects of Haiti's revolutionary past, particularly its fight for self-determination.
Curated by MOCA's Adeze Wilford, Dwelling on the Invisible complements the narrative with a brand new collection. Encounter a range of media within the exhibition, including large-scale paintings, photography, sculptures, video and even a mosaic installation.
Drawing inspiration from his Haitian upbringing, Mathieu's art unveils the nation's rich, yet often troubled, past. He portrays the scars of state violence while celebrating the unwavering spirit of the Haitian people. Through powerful imagery and personal stories, Mathieu invites you to contemplate the connection between past and present, fostering a dialogue about Haitian identity and its global significance.
Both exhibitions will be on display from April 10 through October 6.
