Mar 08, 2026
From: 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM
A powerful documentary revisits a little-examined chapter of Haitian and American history through one family’s story. The Forgotten Occupation: Jim Crow Goes to Haiti explores the U.S. occupation of Haiti from 1915 to 1934, tracing its legacy through the personal reflections of a grandson seeking to understand his grandfather’s complex relationship with the country that once occupied his homeland.
The Miami premiere takes place Sunday, March 8 at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex.
Hosted by Mecca, also known as Grimo, the evening features a screening of the award-winning film followed by a Q&A with director Alain Martin. The documentary centers on Brunel Martin, who came of age during the occupation and later became an advocate for the United States, prompting his grandson to examine themes of contradiction, identity and historical memory through a written letter.
Following the discussion, attendees are invited to a meet and greet at Lakou to continue the conversation in a community setting. The event offers an opportunity for dialogue, reflection and connection around a pivotal period in Haitian history and its lasting impact.
