weekly on Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
From: 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM
Experience a powerful exploration of identity, resilience and creative expression through artworks and stories created within the walls of U.S. prisons.
Moving Beyond Bars will be on view August 9–16 at the ICA Miami Expansion. Presented by the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, this immersive exhibition features murals, writings, video and soundscapes developed during intensive artist residencies with incarcerated women at Florida Women’s Prison in Ocala and incarcerated men in South Dakota’s correctional system. Led by director Suzanne Costello and visual artist Ariadne Albright, the project was supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.
The exhibition opens with a gallery talk and panel discussion on Saturday, August 9 from 5 to 7 p.m., featuring Costello and Sophia Diehl, SPDT Administrator and Program Assistant. Moving Beyond Bars is part of ICA Miami’s community engagement initiatives and underscores the transformative role of art in fostering connection and supporting reentry.
