Celebrate the legacies of environmental champions, Marjory Stoneman Douglas & Tokitae.
A special event co-presented by the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center and O, Miami, takes place on Sunday, April 7, Marjory Stoneman Douglas' birthday. Poems on the Sandbar honors the life and work of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, a tireless environmental activist, and Tokitae (Lolita), an orca who became a symbol of the fight for animal welfare.
Here's what you can experience:
- Workshop: Led by award-winning poet Yaddyra Peralta, collaborate on a poem inspired by the environment Marjory Douglas fought to protect.
- Reading: Hear a heartfelt poem written by Miami's elementary school students in honor of Tokitae the orca.
- Celebration: Raise a glass of tea or cocktails (Marjory's favorite!) in celebration of this year's Marjory Stoneman Douglas Award winner, Arsimmer McCoy.
- Open Mic: Feeling inspired by Marjory's legacy? Share your own original poems about the environment.
