Staging Cinema
May 30, 2025
Starting: 2:15 PM
Explore how performance and theatricality are reshaping contemporary Caribbean cinema in a panel that examines the intersection of film, memory and political expression. Through discussions with filmmakers and artists working across documentary, hybrid and live formats, this event offers insight into how performative strategies are used to confront historical trauma, reclaim narratives and engage collective experience.
Staging Cinema: Performance, Theater, and Contemporary Caribbean Film takes place Friday, May 30 at the Koubek Center. Panelists include Joseph Hillel (Koutkekout), Natalia Lasalle-Morillo (En Parábola/Conversations on Tragedy (Part I)) and Génesis Valenzuela (A Freedom Struggle: Looking for Lucrecia Perez), moderated by playwright and filmmaker Carmen Pelaez. The conversation is part of the 2025 Third Horizon Film Festival lineup and will focus on how artists balance catharsis, resistance and realism through performance in both film and live work.
