Sunset Salons at Vizcaya: Preserving Indigenous Mexica Dance Traditions
Feb 18, 2026
From: 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM
An evening talk and visual presentation explores how Indigenous Conchero and Mexica dance traditions continue to evolve as living cultural practices rooted in ceremony and community.
Sunset Salons at Vizcaya: Preserving Indigenous Mexica Dance Traditions takes place Wednesday, February 18 at Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, presented in the Main House courtyard. Part of Vizcaya’s Sunset Salons series, the program brings together scholarship, artistic practice and lived experience to examine Indigenous dance as both an archive of ancestral knowledge and a contemporary expression of identity, resilience and cultural continuity.
The discussion features Tribal archaeologist Ihuixaya Tapia and Miami-based artist and filmmaker Greko Sklavounos, whose work spans collaborative research, visual storytelling and documentary practice. Together, the presenters consider the relationship between movement, music, natural elements and communal memory, emphasizing preservation as an active, embodied process sustained across generations. The event is produced in collaboration with Ameyal Mexican Cultural Organization, which focuses on sharing Mexican cultural heritage through pre-Hispanic dance, traditional music and cultural education.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with complimentary wine, and the talk begins promptly at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5, with free admission for students and Vizcaya members. ASL interpretation and reserved seating are available upon request with advance notice.
