The Baroque + Neo-Baroque
Oct 18, 2026
Starting: 2:00 PM
Baroque forms and contemporary chamber music meet in a New World Symphony program tracing centuries of musical reinvention. The Baroque + Neo-Baroque takes place Sunday, October 18, at the New World Center in Miami Beach.
Performed by New World Symphony Fellows and alumni, the program moves from early and Classical-era works by Matthias Weckmann, Sigismund von Neukomm and C.P.E. Bach to 20th- and 21st-century responses by Ernest Bloch, Alban Berg and Thomas Adès. Together, the selections show how Baroque ideas of counterpoint, variation, ornament and instrumental dialogue continue to echo through later chamber music.
The concert features New World Symphony alumnus Miles Haskins on basset clarinet in Adès’ Alchymia for Clarinet Quintet. Haskins, now a clarinetist and solo bass clarinetist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, has also performed with ensembles including The Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and New York Philharmonic.
The program includes Neukomm’s Quintet in C major, Weckmann’s Sonata No. 4 à 4 in A minor, Bloch’s Concertino for Flute and Viola, C.P.E. Bach’s Sinfonia in G major, the Adagio from Berg’s Kammerkonzert and Adès’ Alchymia.
