Unveiling of Christina Pettersson’s She Spoke for the Birds
Mar 08, 2026
Starting: 10:00 AM
A new public mural honoring environmental advocate Marjory Stoneman Douglas is unveiled during a community gathering at Marjory Stoneman Douglas Park in Miami Beach. Taking place Sunday, March 8 at 10 a.m., the unveiling of She Spoke for the Birds introduces a permanent work by Miami-based artist Christina Pettersson commissioned through the City of Miami Beach Art in Public Places program.
Installed on the exterior wall of a park facility, the mural depicts Douglas within the landscape of the Florida Everglades, the ecosystem she spent her life working to protect. Created using concrete vinyl, the work reflects Pettersson’s long-standing interest in Florida’s ecological history and endangered environments. A Miami native born in Stockholm, Pettersson creates large-scale drawings, installations and collaborative projects that explore the region’s natural and cultural narratives.
The unveiling event will include guests from Friends of the Everglades, the organization Douglas founded, along with members of the Miami Beach Commission for Women. The mural is the first of two permanent works by women artists installed by the city’s Art in Public Places program during Women’s History Month.
Pettersson’s work is held in collections including the Pérez Art Museum Miami, Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami and The Bass Museum of Art. Her practice often engages communities in exploring the layered histories of South Florida’s landscapes.
