A playwright’s bond with his grandmother becomes the center of a funny, layered look at memory, family history and artistic inheritance. We Had a World runs January 22 through February 14 at GableStage’s Wolfson Family Theatre at The Biltmore in Coral Gables.
Written by Joshua Harmon and directed by Stuart Meltzer, the regional premiere traces three decades of family history through Harmon’s relationship with the grandmother who introduced him to theater, art and the cultural touchstones that helped shape him as a writer. With perspectives refracted through his mother’s version of events, the play uses humor, tenderness and Rashomon-style storytelling to explore how families remember, argue and love across generations.
Harmon, whose plays include Bad Jews and Prayer for the French Republic, is known for comedies that pair sharp dialogue with questions of identity, belonging and family obligation. We Had a World continues GableStage’s 28th season of regional and Florida premieres at its Coral Gables home.
Performances are scheduled Wednesdays through Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., with matinees on Wednesdays, Sundays and the final Saturday at 2 p.m.
