Oasis Visitor Center

Located on the eastern side of Big Cypress National Preserve off of Tamiami Trail (Highway 41), the Oasis Visitor Center serves as a welcome station to incoming visitors. Park rangers and staff are ready to answer any questions you might have about the preserve or activities in Big Cypress. The center also contains a Florida National Park Association bookstore and shop as well as a film about the National Preserve.

Visitor Center Amenities and Services

Visitors will notice art and culture exhibits associated with the natural history of Big Cypress throughout the visitor center. The art exhibits change during the year, so returning visitors will experience something different with each visit. The indoor exhibits are spread out with one side containing hands-on displays about the geology and the natural habitats you will discover within the park, while the other side is dedicated to the rich history and traditions of the Seminole and Miccosukee Native Americans. There are displays showcasing hand-crafted jewelry, dolls, and clothing made from these native tribes.

Outside the Oasis Visitor Center, there are picnic tables, a native flower garden, and a few information panels with interesting details about the area. This is also where the 1,300 mile-long Florida Trail ends. There is a hiking trail located north of the Visitor Center, which is hiker-friendly during the dry season (November-April). A wildlife observation deck is attached to the visitor center with a boardwalk crossing over the marshlands. You may spot an alligator, gar, herons, snow-white egrets, and even red-shouldered hawks.

Lodging

The Oasis Visitor Center is near a few of the preserve’s campgrounds. Burns Lake campground, Midway campground, and Monument Lake campground are all located less than a half-hour drive from the visitor center. Oasis Visitor Center also houses the Off-Road Vehicle Office. This office issues permits for driving vehicles off-road in Big Cypress Preserve.
