Art & Culture In The Miami Design District

Art and Fashion Meet in the Miami Design District

By Angela Caraway-Carlton - August 26, 2026

It’s one of Miami’s poshest neighborhoods where high fashion meets powerful art. The Miami Design District uniquely doubles as a luxury shopping mecca and an open-air museum with public art, galleries and over-the-top architecture that’ll make you stop and stare. You can spend an entire day there shopping, art peeping and then dining at one of the MICHELIN-worthy restaurants that’s just as pretty as the art outside.

Discover a Vibrant Outdoor Art Experience

Strolling the Miami Design District is like having access to a free outdoor art museum. That is if the museum is surrounded by luxury shops. Visitors can appreciate an array of public art by local and renowned artists, and the art and exhibitions change during Miami Art Week every December. Some of the art is in plain sight, while other artistic treasures are a bit more hidden.

    Standout Sculptures

It’s hard to miss large-scale installations like the iconic "Fly’s Eye Dome" by Buckminster Fuller, which also leads to a parking garage and the larger-than-life fiberglass bust sculpture of architect "Le Corbusier" by French artist, Xavier Veilhan. If you step inside The Moore, which houses a hotel, private club and restaurant, you’ll be mesmerized by Zaha Hadid’s “Elastika” that dramatically stretches above diners at the Italian restaurant, Torno Subito by Massimo Bottura. And there’s nothing like walking through Sou Fujimoto’s glassy “Façade” in Palm Court, which feels like a blue waterfall.

    Interactive Art

The entire Design District is a photo lover’s dream. Many stop to snap a shot in front of interactive pieces like Paula Crown’s "Jokester 2", a 10-foot red Solo cup sculpture, and Virgil Abloh’s slanted "Dollar A Gallon III" gasoline sign. Katie Stout’s “Gargantua’s Thumb” was introduced to the Design District in 2025, a fantastical sculpture featuring benches shaped like animals including a dog, crab and whale. Kids love to play on Dozie Kanu’s “Support System,” which are large-scale climbing frames. Another favorite spot is the "Netscape" hanging chairs on the second floor of Palm Court, where visitors can gently swing or relax.

    Colorful Murals

Eye-popping murals also cover the Design District’s sky-high buildings. One of the newest permanent murals is “Pink Spatial Microbiota” by Argentine artist Ad Minoliti, which takes over a 4-story stairwell in the 1926 Buick Building with an imaginative take on the human digestive system. Look out for Brazilian artist Criola’s vibrant mural in Jungle Plaza entitled, "Interdimensional Portal", which showcases 4 Black women mirroring each other; and the trippy black-and-white "Vortex" mural. Even parking garages are art-centric, like the playful Museum Garage, with façades crafted by different global designers, featuring puzzle pieces and dangling cars.

    Museums Worth Seeing

Unlike many art institutions, admission to the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA) is free for all. The architecturally rich museum is flooded with light and showcases contemporary art by local, emerging and under-the-radar artists – the kind you won’t see anywhere else in the area. Don’t miss the outdoor Sculpture Garden, where you can also sit and reflect. At the Haitian Heritage Museum, Haitian art, culture and heritage are celebrated with exhibits and rich programming, including artwork, music, artifacts and films.

    Permanent Art Galleries

Step through the silvery façade of the Opera Gallery to ogle at a wide range of paintings, sculptures and photography from modern masters and contemporary artists. This is your chance to see the works of greats like Marc Chagall, Keith Haring, Fernando Botero and Pablo Picasso. Find established artists and new-to-you names at the lauded David Castillo Gallery, while The Office strives to make the works of emerging artists from Los Angeles and New York accessible to a broader audience, along with hosting exhibitions throughout the year. And Avant Gallery uniquely mingles contemporary art with furniture and decor, so it feels more like a lifestyle experience than a traditional gallery.

The Art of Luxury Shopping and Dining

High-fashion name-dropping comes easy in this neighborhood that’s dripping with luxury brands. Many of the stores are worth popping into just to see their impressive architecture and design. The Design District stores include heritage fashion houses like Louis Vuitton, Dior, Hermès and Cartier’s new boutique that features an undulating fluted glass façade. Other fashionable newcomers include Rolex, with its shimmering green façade, and popular sneaker stores like On Store and high-end streetwear brand Kith.

Many of the Miami Design District’s stores – including Hermès, which features a colorful horseman sculpture perched on its roof, and Louis Vuitton Men’s, with its intricate geometric front – are uniquely designed with over-the-top facades that coordinate with the artistic neighborhood.

In between shopping and art browsing, the Design District restaurants are their own piece of culinary art. They range from restaurants with major MICHELIN credibility like L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon, COTE Miami and Le Jardinier, to internationally acclaimed names such as Milan’s Le Specialità and Mother Wolf. And of course, all the restaurants look like they’re from the pages of a magazine, with gorgeous interiors that match the surrounding aesthetic.
