Barry University, a private Catholic school in Miami Shores, has a lot to brag about when it comes to athletic achievements. The Barry Buccaneers have snagged a bevy of national championships, conference wins and individual accomplishments.
Winning Teams At Barry University
Barry University has a nationally competitive athletics program with 20 varsity teams. Men compete in baseball, basketball, soccer, golf, tennis, volleyball, track and field, cross country and swimming. Women’s sports include basketball, volleyball, beach volleyball, cross country, golf, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and track and field. Barry is part of the NCAA’s Division II and is a Sunshine State Conference (SSC) member. It’s the first school in the conference to win a championship in every sport it offers.
A parrot/pirate mascot named Bucky drums up school spirit at games. You’ll often see students decked out in the school colors of red, black and silver, cheering on the school’s teams. Buccaneer Field hosts various events, including soccer and other outdoor sports.
Winning Teams At Barry University
Over the years, the Bucs have celebrated some extraordinary victories and memorable milestones, and they have one of the most successful NCAA Division II athletic programs in the country. Barry has won 28 NCAA Division II National Championships in eight sports.
While all of Barry’s teams shine, the Buccaneers really stand out on the tennis court, where they’ve become national power players. The Barry men’s tennis team has won seven overall men's tennis Sunshine State Conference championships, and the women have won eight overall Division II titles. Moving to the soccer field, the women's soccer team has a strong history of success, too, having won multiple NCAA Division II National Championships. Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams compete at a high level in the Sunshine State Conference and regularly reach the NCAA Division II tournaments. The baseball team has scooped up multiple conference championships.
Famous Barry University Athletes
Some of the biggest sports names to come out of Barry University are professional soccer player Mark Anderson and Yan Gomes, who was the first Brazilian-born player to compete in Major League Baseball. And while he never graced the basketball court at Barry, NBA great Shaquille O’Neal earned his doctorate in education from the university in 2012.
