A Day Without Sunshine

Starting: 7:30 PM
A pivotal chapter in Miami-Dade’s LGBTQ rights history comes to the stage in a free reading presented by Zoetic Stage in the Peacock Foundation Studio at the Adrienne Arsht Center. A Day Without Sunshine takes place Friday, July 10, exploring the 1977 fight over a Dade County ordinance that banned discrimination against homosexuals. The reading focuses on the people behind the public battle and the local events that helped shape national gay-rights activism.
The play revisits the months after County Commissioner Ruth Shack sponsored the ordinance, when singer Anita Bryant led a campaign to overturn it. That conflict drew national attention, mobilizing LGBTQ advocates while also helping energize religious-conservative opposition to queer rights.
This presentation is a staged reading rather than a full staged production. Admission is free.
