
African Heritage Cultural Arts Center 50th Anniversary

The Adrienne Arsht Center hosts an evening honoring five decades of artistic mentorship and community impact as the Marshall L. Davis Sr. African Heritage Cultural Arts Center marks its 50th anniversary. The Center, based in Liberty City, has long provided year-round, college-preparatory-level arts education to local youth, many of whom train there for a decade or more.
The celebration on Sunday, September 14, begins with a private preview of An Instrumental Start: A Model for the Nation, a forthcoming documentary that chronicles the Center’s legacy through the voices of alumni, educators and students, including Robert Battle, Savion Glover, Marshall Davis Jr., Tarell Alvin McCraney, Tyrell Rolle, Naderah Munajj, Iya lfanike Batts, Bea Hines, Sandra Julien and Phylicia Rashad. Live performances will follow, featuring Battle, Davis Jr., and jazz musician Willerm Delisfort, with a special appearance by Jo Marie Payton. Nu Deco Ensemble will open and close the program.
