Explore the complexities of Black identity and the power of art at AfriKin Talk: Unpacking Blackness in Africa and Its Diaspora, on Wednesday, December 4 at the Scott Galvin Community Center. Presented by Afrikin as part of their Maison Afrikin Miami Art Week event lineup, this thought-provoking artist talk features Cameroonian-born, Amsterdam-based photographer Angèle Etoundi Essamba and UK-based artist and frontman of The Prodigy, Maxim, for an exploration of identity, culture and the transformative power of art. The discussion will be moderated by Jamaican-born interdisciplinary artist and Fulbright Fellow Yrneh Gabon, offering a nuanced dialogue on art’s role in addressing social justice and cultural narratives.
Angèle Etoundi Essamba is celebrated for her striking black-and-white photography that centers African women, challenging stereotypes and celebrating cultural identity. Her work has been showcased in over 200 exhibitions, including at MoMA and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Maxim, known globally as the frontman of The Prodigy, has also gained recognition as a multidisciplinary visual artist, with solo exhibitions in London and Los Angeles that explore the intersections of music, art and cultural expression. Yrneh Gabon brings his expertise in addressing social and environmental issues within the African diaspora to guide this rich discussion.
The evening will delve into critical questions about how personal and collective experiences of Blackness influence artistic expression, the healing potential of art in addressing historical traumas, and the role of artists in fostering understanding and peace. Presented in partnership with Dutch Culture USA, this event invites attendees to engage with leading voices in contemporary art and culture.
