An Evening with Randi Weingarten
Oct 28, 2025
Starting: 7:00 PM
Educator and labor leader Randi Weingarten discusses her new book Why Fascists Fear Teachers: Public Education and the Future of Democracy in a talk presented by the Books & Books Literary Foundation. Both history and manifesto, the book argues that public education is essential to American democracy, tracing how attacks on teachers and schools have historically aligned with authoritarian movements.
Weingarten has served as president of the American Federation of Teachers since 2008, following 11 years as president of the United Federation of Teachers in New York City. Drawing on decades of leadership and classroom experience, she highlights the role of educators in fostering critical thinking, opportunity and civic engagement, positioning teachers as vital defenders of democratic values in the face of censorship and political pressure.
An Evening with Randi Weingarten takes place Tuesday, October 28 at Coral Gables Congregational Church. Admission is free, with books available for purchase at the event.
