ArtLab @ the Lowe: Let the Picture Lead

Helen Frankenthaler’s experiments with color, printmaking and abstraction anchor a new ArtLab exhibition at the Lowe Art Museum. The opening reception takes place Thursday, October 1, introducing Let the Picture Lead: Helen Frankenthaler and Her Circle, which celebrates a significant gift of prints from the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation.

Bringing together paintings and works on paper, the exhibition places Frankenthaler’s practice within the artistic exchanges that shaped postwar American art. Rarely exhibited works and loans from the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation and the Jorge M. and Darlene Pérez Collection highlight her experimentation with materials and color while tracing connections between Frankenthaler and other artists in her circle.

The exhibition also considers how those creative relationships contributed to the development of Frankenthaler’s distinctive approach to abstraction across several decades.
